The “Lustro”:
The Lustres is an ancient decoration technique which
produces iridescent chromatic effects, gold yellow,
ruby red, Silver. It is obtained by the application
of a mixture of metal salts and clay, diluted with
vinegar and a special firing. Of middle-eastern
origin, the Lustro had wide diffusion in the Arabic
ceramic art. Towards the middle of the fifteenth
century it arrived in Deruta and in other few Italian
places. It is unknown how, but surely thanks to
the exchanges with Spain and in particular with
the Island of Majorca, from which the name Maiorica,
then Majolica, that in the Renaissance meant the
only ceramic with the Lustro.
The Lustro is placed with a brush over the surface
of finished articles, glazed and fired, usually
in particular spaces chosen by the painter while
he was painting the object. It is necessary to put
the articles into the stove again for the third
firing.
This is a low temperature firing about 600°
centigrade, produced in reducing atmosphere, introducing
into the stove some smoke substances (wood, brooms,
horse hooves, colophony, etc.) which not to allow
the oxidization of the metals producing special
effects of colouring and of refraction which mark
the Lustro.
After the firing and a slow cooling, article (usually
a plate) is cleaned up. Removing the residuals of
the mixture and of smoke from the surface, so the
metallization of the Lustro can glitter.
Master Boccini has been experimenting various mixtures
and reductions for about 10 years and nowadays he
isi able to create sole masterpieces using the ancient
technique of the Lustro on shapes and decorations
personalized by himself. |
